Go Mt. Airy Gala set for Saturday

Posted

The May 4 Go Mt. Airy Gala – the first for the Mt. Airy Community Development Corporation since 2017 – will be celebrated inside the iconic Sedgwick Theater, which will soon undergo renovations to restore its Art Deco marquee.

It will be a true Night on the Avenue (the event's theme), with local musicians Rev. Chris & the Lower 19119 playing live New Orleans jazz, and local caterer Herb Scott providing spring-season food and drinks. The celebration extends across the street with a pre-party at Bar Lizette, followed by a post-party at Toska Restaurant & Brewery.

The centerpiece of the event will be an awards ceremony honoring community champions and partners, including State Sen. Art Haywood. This year, the Mt. Airy CDC is partnering with Haywood on a street cleaning initiative called Safe Steps Northwest that will tackle litter and debris on the highest crime streets in East Mt. Airy and Germantown - based on persuasive research that cleaner streets are safer streets.

Additional honorees will include the grassroots Save the Train campaign; longtime Mt. Airy business owner and community advocate Moneek Pines-Elliott of ARTrageous Brush & Flow; principal donor and founder of our First Time Home Buyer Fund (which aims to counteract racial bias in home purchasing) Carol Shearon; and our organization's HUD-certified housing counselor Dana Frisby, who celebrates 10 years serving low-income home buyers.
