Local crime report uncovers mystery of ‘stolen’ gig bag

Posted

Chestnut Hill resident Diane Senechal was reading her Chestnut Hill Local last week and was startled by what she saw in the crime report. It detailed an incident about a man who had gotten off a SEPTA bus at the corner of East Mermaid Lane and Germantown Avenue, dropping a bag containing guitar tools and a camera. When he turned to retrieve it, he saw a skateboarder scoop it up and zoom away.

What startled her, she said, was that she’d just seen a neighbor’s post about someone having found exactly that bag.

“I saw that and thought, well okay, what are the chances that this isn’t the same incident? I mean, how many people would be carrying around a bag with exactly those specific items in it?” she told the Local.

Senechal reached out to the person, who goes by the alias 'Wes Morgan' on social media, and yes, indeed, he did still have the bag.

“Sometimes things just line up the right way,” she said.

“I was just leaving for a bike ride at about 6 p.m., and was heading down Mermaid Lane when I saw this bag sitting right there on the curb, just about two doors down from me,” he later told the Local. “So I told myself that if it was still sitting there when I got back from my ride, I’d pick it up and check it out.”

Sure enough, after he finished the ride about two hours later, the bag was still sitting there on the curb.

“As soon as I looked inside it, I realized that it must be somebody’s ‘gig’ bag,” he said. “It had a bunch of guitar stuff in it—cords, a string winder, and a really nice Zoom camera—the kind that picks up quality audio.”

Whoever lost it must have good taste, he added, since it also contained a bottle of Jameson.

He knocked on the door of the house it was sitting in front of, he said, but no, it didn’t belong to anyone there.

“Then I plugged in the camera, to see if I could get a clue who it might belong to,” he said. “But no. Then I posted it on social media—Facebook, Nextdoor, and the Mt. Airy group.”

“If you lost this bag, please tell me the brand of camera and a few other things that were in the bag and I’ll have it ready for pickup,” he posted.

But he got no response.

Then he heard from Diane, who told him she’d read about it in the Local. He went and got a copy to check, and sure enough, it was clearly the same bag.

“What’s odd is that nothing appeared to be taken,” he added.

The Local gave him the number for the 14th District Police Headquarters, which he called. He spoke with someone who told him they’d get back to him.

“I haven’t heard anything yet,” he said. “As of now, the bag is still sitting in my laundry room.”

According to a police spokesperson, they are working to contact the person who filed the complaint. As of press time on Tuesday, they had no further comment.
