Brother Hugh Albright, 82, of Mt. Airy, a retired mathematics professor at La Salle University and former dean of its College of Arts and Sciences, died of congestive heart failure Feb. 24 at Chestnut Hill Hospital.
Brother Albright retired in 1995 after serving on La Salle’s faculty for more than three decades. He was dean of Arts and Sciences from 1970 to 1976.
Earlier he had served on the staff of the Christian Brothers Scholasticate in Elkins Park. His first teaching assignment was at St. Francis Vocational School in Eddington.
Brother Albright was born in Jerusalem, the son of a prominent archaeologist father and a mother who was a professor with a Ph.D. in Sanskrit languages. His father, William F. Albright, was head of the Department of Semitic Languages at Johns Hopkins University.
Brother Albright attended a Christian Brothers school in Maryland and entered the religious order at the age of 18. He received a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Catholic University, graduating summa cum laude. He earned a master’s degree and doctorate in mathematics from the University of Pennsylvania.
He played piano and studied Gregorian chants, which he taught to the Student Christian Brothers Choir at La Salle.
Brother Albright is survived by brothers David and Stephen.
A Mass of Christian Burial was celebrated March 1 at the university’s De La Salle Chapel. Interment was at the Brothers Cemetery in Beltsville, Md.
