Ernest Brydon, 88, of Wyndmoor, a volunteer firefighter and retired Marine Colonel, died of a stroke March 1 at Keystone Hospice in Wyndmoor.
Mr. Brydon was a member of Wyndmoor Hose Company #1 for 24 years, serving as the company’s director for five years and as a training officer. For his service he was made a life member of the company.
He taught firefighting skills at the Montgomery County Fire Academy and had served on the Montgomery County Fire Advisory Board since 1999. He also was an instructor with the American Red Cross and was a volunteer with the Springfield Ambulance Association.
Mr. Brydon enlisted in the Marines in 1942 and saw combat during World War II in the Bougainville, Emirau and Guam campaigns in the Pacific theater. He received a battlefield commission for meritorious service.
He served in the Korean War as a company commander in the 1st Marine Division, and was wounded twice. He was awarded Outstanding Battalion Commander in 1968.
Mr. Brydon later became a Paramarine, jumping in 30 countries, and attended Airborne School, Special Forces School, Amphibious Warfare School, Command and Staff College, Jumpmaster School, Underwater Rescue Service, and completed combat medical training.
He is survived by his wife, Adelle, and a daughter, Jane. Funeral services were held March 6 at Goldsteins’ Rosenberg’s Raphael-Sacks in Philadelphia. – WF
