Sovereign Bank, 8623 Germantown Ave., was robbed today at approximately 1 p.m. Police said two men fled with an undisclosed amount of money. As late as 3:20 p.m., police were still at the scene.
Police issued a statement the following statement this afternoon:
"At approximately 12:57 PM, two subject entered the branch, and while one brandished a dark-colored shotgun with a pistol grip and threatened the employees, the other vaulted the teller counter. After obtaining an undisclosed amount of cash, the subjects fled the bank on foot southbound through the bank’s parking lot, and were last seen getting into a silver sedan with tinted windows, possibly a Pontiac Grand Am, headed south on Ardleigh Street from East Evergreen Avenue. There were no physical injuries."
Police provided the following descriptions:
"The subjects are both described as being 25 to 30 years of age, 5’7” to 5’9” tall, with medium builds. Both subjects were wearing black cloths or masks over the lower portions of their faces. The subject who brandished the shotgun was wearing a red Philadelphia Phillies baseball cap, a dark long-sleeve shirt, tan pants and white sneakers, and was carrying a large black duffle bag. The subject who vaulted the counter was wearing a black Philadelphia Phillies baseball cap, a dark long-sleeved shirt, blue jeans and black sneakers."
Police said they believe the robbers may have escaped through a parking lot off of East Evergreen Avenue, behind the bank, and are looking for a silver car with tinted windows that may have been used as a getaway vehicle.
Peggy Miller of the Chestnut Hill Business Association confirmed that police collected copies of surveillance video taken in several nearby lots maintained by the Chestnut Hill Parking Foundation.
Police asked for public assistance in catching the robbers and noted the suspects are considered armed and dangerous. Anyone with information can call the FBI at 215-418-4000 or the Philadelphia Police Department. Tipsters can remain anonymous.
