Janet M. Mills, piano teacher

Janet Maher Mills, 81, of Mt. Airy, a piano teacher and longtime employee of Weavers Way Co-op in Mt. Airy, died of complications from a fall Aug. 19 at the University of Vermont Hospital in Burlington. She had been vacationing in Vermont with her son Samuel Oliver Mills.

Mrs. Mills had been a piano teacher for more than four decades, and had worked for more than 10 years at Weavers Way, where she ran the deli counter, became an expert on cheese and advocated for workers’ rights.

Raised in Madison, Wis., she attended Oberlin College, where she studied piano and liberal arts.

A lover of plants and trees, she studied and worked as a volunteer at Morris Arboretum in Chestnut Hill. She was a passionate bridge player, garden designer and gardener.

In addition to her son Samuel, she is survived by son Julien Frederick Mills and two grandchildren. Mrs. Mills’ husband, Andrew Mills, died in 2000.

A memorial was held Aug. 26 at Mrs. Mills’ home. Memorial donations may be made to the Morris Arboretum, 100 E. Northwestern Avenue, Philadelphia, PA 19118. – WF
