Marion “Peggy” Sitarchuk, 86, formerly of Mt. Airy and Chestnut Hill, a community volunteer and former social worker, died Sept. 8 at Foulkeways in Gwynedd, where she had been a resident for the past two years.

Until her retirement in 1988, Mrs. Sitarchuk had worked for more than two decades in bookstores at Chestnut Hill Academy, St. Joseph’s University and Rutgers University-Camden.

In 1950, she joined the staff at Reed Street Neighborhood House in South Philadelphia, which provided services to refugees. It was there that she met her future husband, Leon Sitarchuk, an art teacher, painter muralist and sculptor. They married in 1952 and, after raising a family in Mt. Airy, moved to North Wales.

After the death of her husband in 1993, she moved to Chestnut Hill and volunteered at the Woodmere Art Museum, updating the collection database. In 1999, she received Woodmere’s Catherine M. Kuch Distinguished Service Award. At Foulkeways she helped to organize and catalog the library.

She donated 60 of her husband’s sketches for murals to Woodmere and 10 of his steel and metal sculptures to Montgomery County Community College for a sculpture garden.

Raised in Huntingdon County, she attended Juniata College. After graduation she operated a nursery school in Baltimore.

Mrs. Sitarchuk is survived by a son, Eric; a daughter, Peggy; five grandchildren, and a great-grandchild.

A celebration of her life will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 1, at Foulkeways, 1120 Meetinghouse Rd., Gwynedd. Memorial donations may be made to Woodmere Art Museum, 9201 Germantown Ave., Philadelphia, PA 19118. – WF
