Last week Germantown Friends School held a ceremony to honor five senior athletes who will playing their chosen sports at the Division I level in college. Pictured are (from left) GFS Athletic Director Katie Bergstrom Mark, Iris Williamson (Penn/lacrosse), Carey Celata (Penn/squash), Tess Doggett (St. Joseph’s/cross country and track), Annie Morrissey (Dartmouth/lacrosse) and Lydie McKenzie (Dartmouth/squash).
Morrissey and Williamson have been mainstays of every GFS lacrosse team they’ve been on since middle school, and during their three varsity seasons so far the Tigers have claimed one Friends Schools League championship and were runner-up the other two years. They are also key performers in the fall sports season, Williamson for the soccer team, and Morrissey in field hockey.
Doggett has been a dedicated distance runner for many seasons. She has been a consistent scorer in cross country, and she’s been a versatile performer on the track squad, running everything from the 3200 meters to the 4 x 400 relay.
Celata played the number two spot and McKenzie was number three for Germantown’s squash team this winter, as the Tigers made their best showing ever at the U.S. Squash high school team championships, finishing fifth. A three-sport athlete, Celata ran cross country for the FSL champion Tigers in the fall, and she’s a member of the track team in the spring. McKenzie keeps her hand-eye reflexes in tune during the spring season by joining Morrissey and Williamson on the lacrosse squad. --Tom Utescher
