Despite the oppressive heat last Thursday, Mount St. Joseph Academy coolly dispatched another opponent in the Lou Cappiello Summer basketball league, rising to a record of 3-0 with a 49-17 victory over a fellow Catholic Academies squad, Villa Joseph Marie. The Magic forged a 26-6 halftime lead and then spread the gap to more than 30 points early in the second period, going up 38-7 before the Jems deposited their first field goal of the half.

Mount St. Joe, who had knocked off another league rival earlier in the week, Nazareth Academy, had a strong turn-out on Thursday, and was able to send in fresh bodies whenever the weather started on wear on the players who were in action at any given time.

Helping fill out the ranks were three incoming freshman guards, Caitlin Cunningham and Sarah Wills from the St. Alphonsus CYO team, and Libby Tacka, from Gwynedd Mercy Elementary. Tacka’s older sister, Natalie, graduated from Mount St. Joseph in 2011 and is currently playing Division I collegiate field hockey at Lehigh University.

The Magic rebounded well on the offensive end and a lot of second-chance points were garnered by rising senior Meg Geatens, who scored 13 points in the first half. Geatens started out with a field goal and then made one of two free throws, and early on Villa Joe actually led, 4-3. The Magic then took off on a 14-0 run and the Jems never got back in contention.

Junior forward Carly Monzo put up half-a-dozen points before the first half was done, and one of the new freshmen, Wills, scored all of her four points for the night before the intermission.

As the second period began the Magic tacked on eight straight points before Villa Joe moved the numbers on its side of the scoreboard, netting a free throw. During one brief stretch in the middle of the half the Jems outscored the Magic 8-4, but the Mounties finished strong to spread the gap out past 30 points once more.

Geatens had 17 points and Monzo put in 10 for the night, while Tacka split her six points evenly between the halves. There were four apiece from Wills, juniors Alex Louin and Gen Hagedorn, and two points apiece from junior Regan Gallagher and sophomore Emily Carpenter filled out the total for the Magic.
