No fewer than 11 lads from last year’s Springside Chestnut Hill Academy soccer team skedaddled with diplomas back in June, including high-scoring forward Danny Hull, speedy midfielder Dan Trulear, and starting goalie Sam Feirson. Obviously, the Blue Devils will need to have at least a few relatively inexperienced players mature quickly to fill in around the returning veterans if they hope to improve upon last season’s 4-6 showing in the Inter-Ac League.

After starting practice last Monday, the SCH booters ended their first week together with multi-team tune-up tournaments on Friday and Saturday. The itinerary this week includes a trip down south for a match against Chapel Hill High School, located near coach Joe DiSalvo’s collegiate alma mater, the University of North Carolina. DiSalvo, heading into his fourth season piloting the Devils, is a graduate of the old Chestnut Hill Academy, as is second-year assistant coach Bob Buoncristiano.

The four seniors on the team, who have been designated quad-captains this year, are forward Andrew Marcantonio-Fields, midfielder Tom Higgins, and defenders Tim Ogle and Kevin Voye.

Junior midfielders John Phillip Kelly and Anthony Liddy are both third-year varsity players, and their classmates and fellow mids Andy Hall and Evan Wilson were both on the varsity squad last year. New additions from the junior class are defender Pat Feighery, who played second singles on the SCH tennis team last spring, and center mid Alec Greenhill, a transfer from Council Rock North High School.

The contenders for the goalie vacancy left by Feirson are junior Josh Moss and freshman Sam McDowell.

Forward Jose Contreras, mid Michael Bown, and defender Peter Davis are all sophomores who were varsity players as freshmen, and this fall they’ll be joined by classmates Brian Hamilton (mid) and Jack Prochniak (defense).

Coach DiSalvo said he has his eye on half-a-dozen ninth-grade prospects:

Tim Booth, Hunter Ferry, Blake Greenhall, Padgett Gustavson, Harrison Kapp, and Henry Kelly. Greenhall (Alec Greenhall’s brother) and Booth are new arrivals at Springside Chestnut Hill; the other four are returning students.
