The girls lacrosse team at Germantown Academy went 1-2 in its three games last week, and the Patriots may have played best in one of the contests they didn’t win.

After battling to a 10-9 victory over Agnes Irwin on Tuesday, GA had a surprising stumble against another Inter-Ac opponent, Notre Dame. A 14-5 loss to the Irish left the Patriots with a 5-2 record in the league, which for the most part has been very well-balanced and competitive from top to bottom this spring.

On Saturday, Germantown faced Boyertown High School, a team from the western frontier of Montgomery County, and the Bears clawed out an 8-7 victory over GA.

Four days earlier, the Patriots and the Irwin Owls were locked up at 6-6 at halftime, and they continued to battle through the second stanza until host GA finally emerged with a one-goal win. Junior Hanna Bogorowski and sophomore Allie Cannon came away with four and three goals, respectively. Senior Caroline Haynie, a Lehigh University recruit, added one goal, as did juniors Emilie Van Blarcom and Cooper Hall.

In the goal cage, sophomore Ali Carrigan withstood a determined Irwin attack, making 21 saves on the day.

For the rest of the week, GA would be without the services of Hall, who was temporarily on the injured list. Any loss of personnel was a concern with Notre Dame coming up, since GA had gotten the better of the Irish by just one goal, 12-11, in the season opener back on April 2.

As it happened, a couple of goals one way or another wouldn’t have mattered that much in the second meeting, as Notre Dame stormed to a 6-1 halftime lead and kept on rolling. Carrigan corralled 16 saves in a losing cause, and GA received two goals from Bogorowski and singles from Cannon, Haynie, and junior Jen Stack.

Just a week earlier, Germantown had beaten Springside Chestnut Hill, 17-14, and SCH turned around to take Notre Dame into overtime before finally falling, 15-14. From those interrelated results, you might have thought the second GA-Notre Dame would be as close as the first, but it just goes to show that in the wild-and-wooly Inter-Ac this spring, you’d better come to play every single day.

Boyertown High rolled into Saturday’s game against GA with an overall record of 12-2. Like GA, the Bears have a player headed to the lax team at Lehigh, Haley Wentzel. She and her future Mountain Hawk teammate, the Patriots’ Haynie, each finished up with two goals and one assist in Saturday’s set-to.

After Boyertown opened the scoring, Bogorowski and Haynie struck just 65 seconds apart to put Germantown up, 2-1. This would be the only lead of the day for the Patriots, but they still stayed close to their ursine opponents the rest of the way.

The Bears went ahead 3-2 and then 4-3, with GA catching up each time thanks to Haynie, who scored from the top of the offensive set, and Bogorowski, who cashed in on a free position.

Two goals in the final three minutes had the Bears up 6-4 at halftime, but a little over two minutes into the second period junior Emilie Van Blarcom got GA back within one, 6-5.

A seventh Boyertown marker drew a response from Bogorowski, then with a little over nine minutes remaining the Patriots tied the match one last time (7-7), as Haynie came out from behind the goal on the left and found the scorer, Cannon, cutting from the opposite side.

The deciding goal tickled the twine with 7:35 to go, as Boyertown’s Lauren Mengel capped off a nice transition sequence with a successful bounce shot. Three minutes later, GA’s Carrigan (12 saves) kept it a one-goal game by denying the Bears’ Wetzel on an open shot.

After that, though, a yellow card hampered the Patriots in their effort to pull even, and the Bears ambled off with a one-point win.
