Shavuot event at Chabad of Northwest Philadelphia

Posted

Chabad of Northwest Philadelphia is hosting an event on Wednesday, May 15, from 6 to 7:15 p.m., to mark the Jewish holiday of Shavuot, the day that celebrates receiving the Torah at Mount Sinai, 3,325 years ago.

The program, for adults and children, will include a reading of the Ten Commandments from a Torah scroll, as well as a dairy dinner, desserts and ice cream.

Shavuot is traditionally celebrated by eating dairy foods, because the Torah is described (in the Song of Songs) as “honey and milk under your tongue.” Non-dairy ice cream will also be available. It will take place at 7334 Rural Lane, in West Mt. Airy. There is no charge, but RSVP is appreciated to 215-438-5327 or at www.chabadnwp.org.

Chabad is also hosting an all-night learning session, focusing on the day-to-day lessons of the Ten Commandments, starting Tuesday, May 14, at 10:30 p.m. Morning services will also be held on Wednesday and Thursday mornings at 10 a.m. Yizkor on Thursday will be at 11:30 a.m.
