In celebration of her 8th birthday, Mt. Airy resident Sarah France is sponsoring an Alex's Lemonade Stand on Sunday, Sept. 22 in front of O'Doodles, 8532 Germantown Ave., from 11am to 4 pm.

Classmates and friends will gather ahead of time to make posters, flyers, and lemonade. They will sell lemonade as well as treats donated by A Taste of Philly, Bredenbeck’s and The Bone Appetite.

Sarah asked her mom, Mary Kaminski, if she could have a lemonade stand for her 8th birthday party. When Mary told her daughter the story about Alex and the Alex's Lemonade Stand Foundation, Sarah was enthralled. She wanted to make a difference so she decided to expand her plans and donate all proceeds. The mother/daughter pair asked for assistance from local businesses and were shocked with their willingness to support the effort.

Mary, who is a nurse, thinks it’s very fitting for Sarah to be doing this during National Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month.

“Childhood cancer is the leading cause of death by disease in children under the age of 15,” she said. Research for childhood cancer, unfortunately, is largely underfunded.” Less than 5 percent of total government funding for cancer research is dedicated to pediatric cancer research.”

Alex's Lemonade Foundation helps to fill that void. Since 2006 it has funded over 300 research programs and is helping researchers get closer to finding a cure.

Stop by on Sunday or contact Mary at 215-847-8750 with questions.
