Although Malvern Prep and Haverford School have been dominating the regular-season Inter-Ac League golf outings in 2013, Springside Chestnut Hill Academy has gotten the better of at least one Main Line team on the last two occasions.

On September 26 at Waynesboro Country Club, the Blue Devils finished ahead of Episcopal Academy, 240-245, and last Monday at Gulph Mills, SCH eked out another win over the Churchmen, 243-244.

In a format the league adopted in 2012, each school’s team hosts the other five once during the regular season in a series of mini-tournaments. The regular boys’ match play scoring format has been retained, with each team officially entering eight men and then combining the results from its six best rounds to arrive at a team score. At the end of the season, the top individuals will participate in a championship tournament at Merion’s storied East Course.

In the four league competitions to date, Malvern and Haverford have each finished first twice and second twice, but one of the Friars’ runner-up results was a tie with Episcopal, so the Fords currently hold a narrow lead in the standings.

Springside Chestnut Hill has been picking up some momentum recently, following a tie for fourth with Penn Charter in the league opener and a fifth-place finish in the second outing on September 16. After the initial tie with SCH, Penn Charter finished sixth in the next two encounters, and then came in fifth last week, tying Germantown Academy with a score of 251. GA had finished sixth, fourth, and then fifth in the first three Inter-Ac events.

Last week on Haverford’s home course at Gulph Mills, Malvern made the most of beautiful weather conditions and blitzed the field, even winning easily over the second-place Fords, 219-230. On the par-35 front nine at this course, that means that the Friars’ six scorers averaged just one-and-a-half strokes over par.

For the third time this season, senior Jack Grasso led the SCH contingent, shooting a 37, while ninth-grader Chris Dalglish came in with a 39. Dalglish, who was already playing with the varsity last season, had the Blue Devils’ best round in the league’s September 16 gathering, scoring a two-over 38 at Blue Bell Country Club.

The Giegerich brothers, senior Brian and junior Matt, each fired a 40, and rounding out the Blue Devils’ team total were a pair of sophomores, Andrew Kasian (43) and Wyatt Smith (44).

The best score from this side of the Schuylkill was a one-over 36 by Penn Charter junior Owen Davis, while Grasso’s round of 37 was matched by GA junior Jake Niedosik and PC eighth grader Brian Isztwan.

Also scoring for Charter were juniors J.B. Bradbeer and Hunter Gates, each with a 43, and senior Ben Plotnik, with a 44. Sophomore Henry Centeno and his freshman brother Joey each shot a 48, and one of those figures was used to complete the Quakers’ team score.

After Niedosik, the scorers for GA were fellow junior Grant LaSorda with a 41, senior Drew Petersohn with a 42, senior Ross Godick with a 43, and junior Robbie Barnett and freshman Jack Petersohn, each with a 44.

At the top of the leaderboard, one player undercut par, and that was Malvern junior Michael Lamond, with a 34. Four others hit the par of 35 on the nose; seniors Michael David and Kevin McGeary of Malvern, and senior Cole Berman and junior Otis Baker of Haverford.
