'Tuesday Nights at the Movies' continues its 40th season on Nov. 19 with the screening of the 1941 film, 'Pimpernel' Smith.
The film follows Professor Horatio Smith and his students on an archaeological trip to pre-war Nazi Germany to search for the origins of Aryan civilization. Smith's students soon discover that their unassuming professor has a secret agenda, and is responsible for smuggling enemies of the Nazi state out of Germany. The situation becomes even more convoluted when one of his students brings a mysterious woman into the group, who may or may not be working undercover for the Gestapo.
The film is an updated version of the 1934 play, 'The Scarlet Pimpernel,' and is directed by Leslie Howard, who also stars as Professor Horatio Smith. Also starring is Mary Morris, Allan Jeayes and Francis L. Sullivan. It is notable for being one of the first films to openly discuss Nazi labor, concentration and death camps.
The movie begins at 7 p.m. at Woodmere Art Museum. Doors open at 6:30. Admission is free, although donations are recommended.
