In the holiday spirit, Valley Green Bank is holding its 6th annual local book drive from November 29 through December 31. The Mastery Charter elementary schools and Philadelphia District Health Center 9 will be the recipients of this year’s collection. The book drive encourages families to donate new or gently used children’s books, for reading levels between preschool and 8th grade.
Local Chestnut Hill and Mt Airy businesses are joining in this effort by offering to be collection locations for the book drive. Bins to collect the books will be in two Valley Green Bank locations – 7226 Germantown Ave. in Mt. Airy and 23 W. Highland Ave. in Chestnut Hill. Other bins will be located at Elfant Wissahickon Realtors, 8039 Germantown Ave; Gravers Lane Gallery, 8405 Germantown Ave.; both Weavers Way Co Ops at 8424 Germantown Ave.and 559 Carpenter Lane; Chestnut Hill Hospital, 8835 Germantown Ave.; and Big Blue Marble Bookstore, 551 Carpenter Lane. Big Blue Marble Bookstore is offering a 10 percent discount on all books purchased and contributed in the store to this book drive.
Jay Goldstein, Valley Green Bank’s President and CEO, is pleased to be sponsoring such a worthwhile initiative.
“There is no better way to support our children than to encourage them to be avid, accomplished readers,” he said. “As we all know, reading is a key to success in pursuing a lifetime of learning.”
Mastery Charter Schools’ CEO Scott Gordon is thrilled the Mastery Charter Schools’ elementary students were chosen to benefit from this year’s drive.
“Our elementary schools serve over 5,100 students in the city,” he said. “Many of our students coming from formerly low performing district schools are three to four grade levels below where they should be in reading, and making sure they have books creates a culture of learning that will serve them well in realizing their future dreams. We are grateful to Valley Green Bank for creating this wonderful partnership that benefits our youngest learners.”
Philadelphia District Health Center 9 sponsors “Reach Out and Read -- Reading is Doctor-Recommended.” Six hundred doctors and nurses across the Greater Philadelphia region, knowing that growing up healthy means growing up with books, distribute books to young children at 45 Reach Out and Read practices. By talking with parents and caregivers about the importance of reading aloud, they provide families with the tools they need to put their children on the path to school success. Valley Green Bank is pleased to include Philadelphia District Health Center 9 in its Holiday Book Drive.
