Mary Jane Howe Flaith, age 95, died peacefully December 8 at home in Wyndmoor, PA. Beloved wife of the late G. Donald Flaith of Germantown, PA. Born 1918 in Tarentum, PA, the eldest child of Charles P. Howe and Mildred (Powell). She was a graduate of Ohio Wesleyan and received a Master’s from Teachers College, Columbia Univ. During WWII, she joined the Red Cross, aiding G.I.’s at home and abroad. She worked at College Settlement, later teaching at Friends Select. She championed social and environmental causes, and was a Girl Scout Leader for many years. She was known for her enthusiasm, curiosity, love of music and nature, and was especially fond of family and friends’ get-togethers at Charleston Lake, Ont. She is survived by two daughters, Rachel (Ralph Reed, artist) and Karen, her grandson, Jackson Reed, her sister, Elisabeth Simon, brother-in-law John Lineweaver, and many nieces and nephews. Proceeded in death by her husband, Don, her brother, David, her sister, Sally Lineweaver, and brother-in-law Gene Simon. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
