On Saturday, March 22, basketball players of all ages will make some noise at the 2nd Annual CHCA Hoops Madness 3-on-3 Basketball Tournament at Springside Chestnut Hill Academy.

Named with reference to March Madness, the NCAA college basketball championship, Hoops Madness offers kids and adults a chance to play half court, 3-on-3 games of basketball and participate in a variety of shooting contests.

Last year’s inaugural Hoops Madness was a huge success with more than 160 players ranging in age from 5 to 70. Born of a conversation between CHCA president Brien Tilley and Matt Paul, owner of Matt Paul Sports, the event has grown in popularity.

“We simply wanted to provide a family-focused event for Chestnut Hill. We had no idea what kind of response we would get and, obviously, we were thrilled that is was so successful,” Tilley said.

In addition to the support of Matt Paul Sports, Tilley has been pleased with the number of business owners offering to sponsor the event: Bowman Properties, Ron and Abby Pete, Chestnut Hill Sports, Cosimo’s Pizza Café, McNally’s Tavern, Temple Orthopedics and Sports Medicine at Chestnut Hill Hospital, ESF Summer Camps, and Valley Green Bank. Chestnut Hill Hospital provides an on-site ambulance as well.

Richard Snowden, owner of Bowman Properties, considers this event one of the best programs CHCA has held in the last 10 years.

“This generates so much energy and enthusiasm and involves so many kids and young families,” Snowden said. “This kind of program is what makes a community vibrant.”

Players are encouraged to register as teams of four (three players and a substitute) or they can be placed on a team the day of the tournament. Each team will play a minimum of two half-court games and brackets will be based on age groupings. All registered players will receive a CHCA Hoops Madness T-shirt and are eligible to participate in the 3-point, foul-shooting and half-court shooting competitions.

Last year, the Chestnut Hill Hospital staff formed multiple teams and they plan to return this year. Tilley encourages other businesses on the Avenue to form teams and join in the fun.

Families and friends are also encouraged to fill the stands and sidelines throughout the tournament. Throughout most of the day, six games will be going on at once and, in between games, players can warm up with Matt Paul Sports coaches and practice their shots. As it did last year, Matt Paul Sports will provide basketballs, referees and coaches to help players in between games.

“Matt Paul Sports is proud to play a part of Hoops Madness,” said Matt Paul. “We love working together with the community on an event that draws so players across so many ages. We can’t wait for an outstanding event.”

Register for CHCA Hoops Madness at www.chestnuthill.org. The price for children 18 and under is $15; for adult CHCA Members, $20, and for non-members, $25.
