Paul Lewis, counselor

Paul Lewis, 86, of Wyndmoor, a counselor at Community College of Philadelphia for 36 years, died June 5 of complications from dementia at Gwynedd Square Nursing Center.

Mr. Lewis, who retired from Community College in 2004, had been head of the counseling department for part of his tenure and was involved in college placement, assisting in the transfer of students and their credits to traditional four-year institutions.

Earlier he had worked as a counselor for B'nai B'rith Counseling Services.

Born in Philadelphia and raised in Jenkintown, he served in the Army Air Corps. He attended Temple University on the G.I. Bill and received a bachelor's degree in business administration.

For 10 years, he worked in private industry and for the City of Philadelphia, but, deciding to change careers, he returned to Temple to obtain a master's degree in psychology.

Mr. Lewis is survived by his wife, the former Sandra Cutler; a son, Ethan; daughters Judy Hoffman and Sharon Bloomgarden, and two grandchildren.
