Jane Danihel, 73, of Laverock, a nurse and longtime community volunteer, died Sept. 3 of a lung embolism at Chestnut Hill Hospital.

Mrs. Danihel, a graduate of Chestnut Hill Hospital's School of Nursing, had worked at the hospital for more than four decades. She was one of the first nurses assigned to the hospital's cardiac care unit and was promoted to nurse-in-charge of the men's ward. She later moved into hospital administration, working in the area of risk management.

When the hospital was purchased by Community Health Systems in 2005, she stayed on to help with the transition and retired in 2006.

More recently, she served for eight years as patient risk assessor at the Green Tree Community Health Foundation, retiring in 2011.

A member of the Independent Order of Odd Fellows, Mrs. Danihel volunteered for many years with charitable activities sponsored by the organization. She was involved with fundraising events for the Eastern Pennsylvania Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation and Camp JRA.

For more than 30 years she worked to support the IOOF's United Nations Pilgrimage for Youth, assisting Philadelphia area young people with the application, screening and acceptance process. Each summer she would join other members to meet buses and take participating students through Philadelphia's historic sites.

A local leader of the IOOF, she was a member of several grand lodge and grand encampment staffs and was a representative to the Middletown home.

Raised in Mt. Airy, she attended Henry H. Houston Elementary School and Philadelphia High School for Girls. She received a bachelor's degree in nursing from what is now La Salle University in 1983. She was an active member of the Mt. Airy Presbyterian Church.

She is survived by her husband, Charles; sons Courtney, Joseph and Charles; 11 grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.

Funeral services and interment were held Sept. 9 at the Kirk & Nice Funeral Home, Sunset Memorial Cemetery, in Feasterville. Memorial donations may be made to the Arthritis Foundation-Camp JRA, 111 S. Independence Mall East, Suite 500, Philadelphia, PA 19106.
