Episcopal humbles Lion lax'ers

by TOM UTESCHER

Once again, Episcopal Academy proved to be the hump Springside School's lacrosse team just can't get over. Runner-up in the Girls Inter-Ac last year, the Lions suffered their lone league loss of 2003 at the hands of EA's Churchwomen, who went on to claim their fourth straight championship.

Last Tuesday, high hopes amongst the visiting Lions dissipated as a flurry of goals late in the first period netted Episcopal a 6-2 halftime lead. Paced by four goals from senior Jen Robinson, the Churchwomen went on to win 12-5, improving to 5-1 overall and 2-0 in the league, while Springside, which got a hat-trick from junior Bunny O'Reilly, slipped to 7-4, 1-1. On a busy afternoon in the...

Early letdown costs softball Lions

by TOM UTESCHER

In the second through seventh innings, Springside was only outpointed 9-6 by visiting Hill School in last Wednesday's non-league tilt. Unfortunately for the host Lions, they couldn't exclude the visitors' eight-run turn at bat in the first frame, and the Blues came away with their first victory in five games this season.

Springside's record moved to 1-3-1 overall, and remained unchanged in the Girls Inter-Ac League, at 0-2. Hill's Laura Poatsy went the distance on the mound and recorded eight strike-outs with three walks, while Springside starter Delia Langan (2K, 4BB) threw for six innings and Sofia...

Mount gets on swimmingly at Hatters' track bash

by TOM UTESCHER

The Mount St. Joseph Magic were among a dozen track teams that gathered at Hatboro Horsham High School last Friday for the Lady Hatters Invitational, only to be thoroughly doused by old Ma Nature.

At one point thunder and lightning halted the proceedings for about 45 minutes, and by the time the meet finally wrapped up around 9:00 PM, the competitors who remained couldn't find even the tiniest dry patch anywhere on their uniforms.

Although the junior prom had all of the Mount 11th graders occupied for the evening, the Magic...

CHA golf rallies past Hill

by TOM UTESCHER

Early last week rain caused the postponement of both Malvern matches in Chestnut Hill Academy's initial Inter-Ac League series of the 2004 golf season, but the Blue Devils finally got on the course for a non-league session on April 16.

In the first foursome to finish the nine-hole round at Sunnybrook, Bo Maguire of visiting Hill School came in right at par with a 36 to help give the Blues an early edge. Later on, a 38 from Jason Ochroch and a 39 from fellow sophomore Nick Pearson helped turn it around for the locals, and...

CHA racquetmen edged by Friends Central

by TOM UTESCHER

You could make a strong case that tennis squads have suffered more than any other spring sports teams during the spate of rain-outs over the last month.

When Chestnut Hill Academy's Blue Devils hosted Friends Central last Monday, it was only their second match of the season, and the previous one had been played back on March 24.

The Devils (0-2) and the visiting Phoenix (4-0) each won two singles matches and one doubles bout during their recent encounter, and Friends Central prevailed in three sets...
