Mount gets on swimmingly at Hatters' track bash by TOM UTESCHER The Mount St. Joseph Magic were among a dozen track teams that gathered at Hatboro Horsham High School last Friday for the Lady Hatters Invitational, only to be thoroughly doused by old Ma Nature. At one point thunder and lightning halted the proceedings for about 45 minutes, and by the time the meet finally wrapped up around 9:00 PM, the competitors who remained couldn't find even the tiniest dry patch anywhere on their uniforms. Although the junior prom had all of the Mount 11th graders occupied for the evening, the Magic still turned in some noteworthy results. Sophomore Kate Hagedorn took third in the high jump at 5'8", and Mount St. Joe also placed third in the 4 x 800 meter relay with the quartet of senior Orla Treacy, freshmen Kristen McFadden and Genevieve O'Mara, and senior Lisa Prybella. O'Mara improved the Mount's position on her two loops, and Prybella, the anchor, lifted the locals into third with a split of 2:36. It was not a night to put too much emphasis on times, however, as some discrepancies in this area indicated that the weather conditions were causing some thumb slippage on stopwatch buttons. Later in the evening, Prybella and sophomore Siobhan O'Connor each finished third in different heats of the 400, and Treacy came in fourth in the 3200 meter run. Mount freshman Chelsea Clark captured third place in her heat of the 1600, and Hagedorn came in fifth overall in the 100 (at 13.4) after placing third in the fastest heat of the event (winning time: 13.1). In the 200, sophomore Jess Mulhern finished second in her heat in 29.2 seconds, and in the other heat freshman Casey Lumpkin was third, clocking in at 30.6. In the 4 x 100 relay Lumpkin (#2) and Mulhern (anchor) teamed up with Hagedorn (#3) and freshman Christin Kouch (#1) to place fourth. The JV section of the race was won by another Mount quartet, thanks in part to a strong anchor leg by freshman Carla Bryant. She followed sophomore Rachel Hill and fellow ninth graders Meri Taylor and Erica Braun in the MSJ line-up. In the final event of the evening, the 4 x 400 relay, a Mount team made up of senior Laura Reardon and Hill, Prybella and O'Connor took third place, just ahead of the all-freshman JV foursome of McFadden, Braun, Bryant and Jennifer Havard. |
