CHA Track eclipses Episcopal by TOM UTESCHER It was just a regular-season Inter-Ac League dual meet, but by the end of last Tuesday’s track and field encounter it was clear that host Chestnut Hill Academy didn’t take it lightly. No fewer than six CHA athletes established new personal records in various events as the Blue Devils dumped visiting Episcopal Academy, 78.5 - 43.5. Chestnut Hill, which had defeated Germantown Academy in its Inter-Ac opener, rose to 2-0 in the league and 4-0 overall, while Episcopal dipped to 1-2. Previously, the Churchmen had beaten Haverford School and lost to Penn Charter. Against Episcopal, Blue Devil senior Jeff Bryant gave the hosts a 15-point boost by sprinting to victory in the 100, 200, and 400 meter races, and in the 100 he ran a personal best of 11 seconds flat. Junior Julian McFadden also ran his best in the 100 (11.2) to finish second, and the versatile 11th grader won the long jump and was second in the triple jump, as well. Junior Tom Samph set a PR of 15.4 seconds in the high hurdles, and he led one-two-three sweeps for CHA in both the high and intermediate hurdling events. In the intermediates, Blue Devil sophomore Malcolm Taylor ran his best time to date, at 44.7 seconds. No records were set in the shot put pit, but Chestnut Hill was still able to add a 9-0 sweep to its team total as sophomore Wayne Crawford led the way. CHA pulled eight points out of the pole vault, where senior Monty Ogden and junior Sam Gilbert tied for first at 10’6”. Junior Kevin Hines won the 800 for the hosts and Andrew Ferry was second, and Ferry, who rarely runs the mile, won that race with a PR of 4:39.2. EA’s Packy McCormick was the runner-up here, and in the two-mile he gave the Churchmen their only first-place finish on the track. It was a convincing performance for CHA when one considers that the Devils were not at full strength in the sprints. Gabe Eldred was recovering from a minor injury, and fellow senior Evan Farren was away on a college visit. Episcopal basketball luminaries Gerald Henderson and Wayne Ellington went one-two in the high jump, and Henderson also won the triple jump and was second in the long jump. In the triple, CHA’s Terrence Williams produced his best effort to date, traveling 40’3” to take third. Results |
