GFS Baseball Routs League Leaders AFS The Germantown Friends School Tigers played a near perfect game at home last Friday to beat a very strong Abington Friends club 10-0. The ‘Roos’ came to Gratwick Field undefeated in the Friends Schools League and ready for a tough game. Each team sent their number one pitcher to the mound: senior David Molotsky for Abington and senior Aaron Sommer of Mt. Airy for Germantown. Sommer got the best of the match up, holding AFS to one hit and giving up only one walk. He threw only 17 balls in his best outing of the season. The team played great defense in support of Sommer. Most notable was a beautiful sliding grab early in the game by second baseman Nick Malinowski of Mt. Airy on a hard hit ball up the middle. Malinowski quickly found his feet and gunned the runner at first, turning what looked like a sure hit into an easy out. Overall the GFS outfield refused to let anything drop and the infield played solid. The Tiger offense contributed as well, with each starter getting at least one hit on the day. In a well-balanced attack, GFS scored in every inning except the first. The first runs of the game came as a result of senior John Sharrar’s two-out single and his hard work to move up on a stolen base, a wild pitch, and score on a steal of second by Jack McCoubrey of East Falls. McCoubrey, who then scored on a triple by junior Brian Pepe-Mooney. In the third inning, the Tigers made a push but came away with only one run on three singles and a sacrifice fly by junior Nate Gemberling-Johnson of Wyndmoor. In the fourth the Tigers took one hit and turned it into a pair of runs when they capitalized on a couple of AFS errors. The game ended after the Tigers added five runs on a double to the track fence by Gemberling-Johnson and RBI singles by pitcher Sommer, McCoubrey, and junior Marc Schwartz. GFS is now tied for first in the league with Abington Friends at 6 -1. |
