C. C. attended Plymouth Meeting Friends for lower school. After Plymouth, she attended Penn Charter for two years, and graduated from high school at Friends Select School in 2003. C. C. attended Complutense University, Madrid for a year after high school in an intensive Spanish language program. After Complutense she enrolled in Saint Louis University, Madrid, where she was a freshman at the time of her death. She was studying nursing, with Spanish as a second major. C. C. had traveled to Nepal in the summer after her high school junior year through a program sponsored by the Girl Scouts. There she taught English to elementary school children, and it was this experience, and the need she saw for basic health care in Third World countries, that had propelled her toward a nursing career. She is survived by her mother and father, Lynda Greenwade and Art Thorp, as well as two sisters, Lydia and Hailey. A memorial service will be held for C. C. at Race Street Meeting, 15th and Race Streets, on Sunday, May 15 at 2 p.m. Her family asks that donations be made to the Erin Schafle Fund for Student Overseas Travel at Friends Select School,Luigi Sirianna Luigi Sirianna, of Chestnut Hill, died May 9. He was the husband of the late Maria Sirianni, nee Amarso; son of the late Pasquale and Arcangela Sirianni; father of Pasquale (Rosemary), Angela, and Diane Rothwell (David); and grandfather of Christine, Joseph (Veronica) and David. Relatives and friends may call at Jacob F. Ruth’s, 8413 Germantown Ave., on Saturday, May 14 at 8 a.m., to be followed by a Funeral Mass at Holy Cross Church, 154 E. Mt. Airy Ave., at 10 a.m. Interment will be at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. Memorial contributions may be made to the American Heart Association. Stephen M. Woodruff, M.D.
Born in Philadelphia on July 22, 1944, Dr. Woodruff was the youngest child of the late Viola H. and Marston T. Woodruff, M.D. He was the husband of Carol (nee Siegrist), his wife of 35 years. Dr. Woodruff was also the father of Leigh Marquardt, Lauren Averill, M.D., and Andrew M. Woodruff; father-in-law of Charles Marquardt and Joshua Averill; and grandfather of Corinne Marquardt. His brother, C. Lawrence Woodruff, M.D. of Chestnut Hill, his sister, Constance W. Atwell, Ph.D. of Pinehurst, N.C, and seven nieces and nephews also survive him. Dr. Woodruff graduated from Lincoln High School in 1962 and from Brown University in 1966. He then attended Jefferson Medical College, where he met his wife Carol, who was a nursing student at the time. He was a member of the Nu Sigma Nu medical fraternity. After graduating from medical school in 1970, Dr. Woodruff was a general practice intern at York Hospital for one year. He then served in the U.S. Army as a General Medical Officer at Fort Jackson, S.C. from 1971 to 1973. Following his discharge from the military, Dr. Woodruff specialized in obstetrics and gynecology. He performed his OB/GYN residency at Magee Women’s Hospital of the University of Pittsburgh between 1973 and 1976. In 1977, Dr. Woodruff joined the staff of Chestnut Hill Hospital, where he served for the rest of his career. In September 2003, many of Dr. Woodruff’s former and current colleagues — including doctors, nurses and support staff alike — gathered to celebrate his career and to express their affection for the doctor many simply called “Woody.” Dr. Woodruff continued practicing medicine until late 2004, when he became too ill to continue. In addition to his profession, Dr. Woodruff found great satisfaction spending time with his family and many friends. He will be remembered fondly by the parishioners of St. Thomas’ Episcopal Church, Whitemarsh, where he was an active member and developed many cherished friendships. Dr. Woodruff was also a longtime member of the Philadelphia Cricket Club, and he enjoyed many happy days playing golf and socializing there with family and friends. A memorial service was held on May 7 at St. Thomas’ Church, Whitemarsh. Cecily (C. C.) Thorp was killed in an automobile accident on April 30 outside Zaragoza, Spain. Aged 19, she had previously lived on Highland Avenue and worked summers and holidays at El Quetzal.
Stephen M. Woodruff, M.D., 60, died at his Flourtown home on May 1.
