CHA baseball brings strong record into post-season

crfaCHA sophomore Anthony Cafagna put in a strong performance against Germantown Academy.

The Chestnut Hill Academy baseball team finished up its regular season by defeating Friends Central Saturday afternoon with a 16-5 win. The Blue Devils’ final regular season record was 22-8 and 4-6 in the tough Inter-Ac league.

This past week, the Blue Devils won three non-league games against Academy of the New Church, Central and Friends Central and lost two league games to Haverford School and Germantown Academy.

The game of the week was on Friday at Germantown Academy. Both teams had sophomores on the hill and both left nothing out there. The Patriots Ian Hoff went the distance and Anthony Cafagna completed five innings for CHA. Both teams played great defense all game. GA scored first in the bottom of the third on a two out single. The Blue Devils responded in the top of the fourth when Cory Broderick singled with two out and Cafagna tripled to score Broderick. Anthony Biello scored Cafagna with a single to right and the Blue Devils were up 2-1. GA answered with a single, walk and a double to tie the game in the bottom of the fourth. In the sixth inning, GA had the bases loaded with one out. GA's John Barr hit a line drive that Scott Redpath turned into a double play.

After CHA failed to score in the top of the seventh, the ball seemed to bounce in favor of GA. After a crazy hop over Anthony Giovinozzo's head at third base for a hit and a bloop single, GA had runners at first and second. Then GA's Matt Brown hit a routine grounder to first base that jumped over Scott D'Zengelski head and rolled into right field. Brett DiFelice raced in and threw a strike to the plate but the runner beat the throw and GA won it 3-2.

The Blue Devils will get ready for the start of the Post Season Independent Tournament on Tuesday May 24th.
