Letters Good neighbor I just want to publicly thank Joe Valentine, the painting contractor for Killian's Hardware, for making the extra effort to protect the pedestrians along Germantown Avenue while he was busy painting the front of Killian's Hardware store recently. Joe made sure to continue to provide safe passage on the sidewalk while painting, instead of just closing the sidewalk and sending the pedestrians into the street, as is often the case. When he had to paint the second floor, he went beyond the call of duty and provided a tent to protect passers by from any paint falling on them. That kind of extra effort deserves a hardy “thank you” from the entire community! Also, according to Russell, manager at Killian's Hardware, Joe also deserves a thank you for the time he has donated in the past to fixing the Chestnut Hill sign at Bethlehem Pike. Thanks Joe, for being a good neighbor! Bob Previdi Congratulations Congratulations to those elected to serve on the board of directors of the Chestnut Hill Community Association. You have sought and now take on an awesome but exciting and rewarding position in our community. Jump right in! You will meet some of Chestnut Hill's most interesting residents from all parts of our neighborhood. For those of us with a history of community associations, the results of this election are very telling. The top vote-getters, chosen by the members of the association, represent the traditional community association role — that is, to serve the community as our mission statement and bylaws direct our board members to do. The results also indicate that, as always, we do not want any board members interfering in the editorial integrity of the Local, or cutbacks in the physical maintenance of the community. To operate as a traditional community association does not preclude creative new ideas and methods of operating. New board members have always come with such ideas. Recent board members have added new life to and increased attendance in Pastorius Park Concerts, focused our attention on improvements for the Water Tower and our public school, as well as brought us together and raised money with the Black and White Gala on the Avenue and Wine Tasting at Woodmere, among other things. Good luck newly elected board members! You join an association that is almost 60 years old. Make us proud as your bios in the Local indicate you can.Marie Lachat Starbucks Comes Through I wanted to bring to your attention the efforts made by Starbucks Flourtown manager Chad Leverenz and his staff on May 22. The previous Friday morning I approached Chad as I was in a bit of a bind. A plumbing project took a turn for the worse the previous day and it was clear that a party I was having on Sunday would have to be relocated. The party was for longtime volunteer Scott Kreilick, former chair of the Black Horse Inn Advisory Committee. I arrived at the Flourtown store around noon on Sunday and learned that Chad had come in on his day off, set the tables and umbrellas up outside and had run to the Chestnut Hill store to get a large carafe. He then made us the coffee (no charge) and even visited with the group for a time before departing to continue to enjoy his “day off.” More than three dozen residents turned out and everyone remarked that it was a great place to hold the party and that this Starbucks was very much a community supporter. Chad and his staff should be commended for making us feel welcome and agreeing to do this on such short notice. Barbara L. Sherf |
