World War II veteran recalls D-Day and beyond

For Herb Lucas, Memorial Day stirs up memories of loss and feelings of sadness. Suffering from a paralyzed arm and hand, Lucas, 84, has been unable to decorate his brother's grave in his native Michigan for several years, a Memorial Day family tradition honored religiously during his childhood. For reasons of distance, Lucas was also prevented this week from visiting the Arlington grave of his wife, who he lost to cancer four years ago after nearly 60 years of marriage.

CHA dean resigns over Rosenau letter

Chestnut Hill Academy's dean of students resigned last week in a new twist in the school's case with former student Andrew Rosenau, whom the school sought to dismiss in 2002.

Jerome Murphy, dean of students in the all-male institution's upper school, offered his resignation after admitting in his sworn deposition on May 25 to writing a warning letter to Rosenau's college of choice, Lehigh University, two years ago, in violation of a court order that enjoined Chestnut Hill Academy from doing...


CHCA board re-elects officers to second term

Last yearıs officers were re-elected to new terms by the Chestnut Hill Community Association board of directors at its meeting on May 27. They are Maxine Maddox Dornemann, president; Douglas Doman, vice president of the operational division; Tia Burke, vice president of the social division; Stan Moat, vice president of the physical division; Chris Kemezis, treasurer; and Dina Hitchcock, secretary.

Pastorius Park concerts begin June 16

The 2004 Pastorius Park concert series will begin on Wednesday, June 16, with a concert by bluesman Georgie Bonds and his band. The series, which will include 10 Wednesday evening concerts and one Sunday afternoon children's concert, is sponsored by the Chestnut Hill Community Association.

All the concerts will be given at Pastorius Park, Lincoln Drive and Abington Avenue. Rain place is Springside School's large auditorium, Cherokee Street and West Willow Grove Avenue. Each of the evening concerts will begin at 7:30 p.m., one half-hour earlier than the starting time in past years.

The children's concert, to be given by the Erin Flynn & Co-op Band, is scheduled for Sunday, July 11, at 3:30 p.m. This band is known for its high-energy interactive spin on kids' classics and family friendly versions of their parents' favorites.

Sholom Aleichem Club members  promote Jewish culture, values

On paper, the Sholom Aleichem Club defines itself as an organization dedicated to preserving and promoting secular humanistic Jewish culture and values in the Greater Philadelphia Region and beyond. The club is named after writer Sholom Aleichem, whose Tevye stories were the basis for Fiddler on the Roof. Sholom Aleichem also means "peace" in Yiddish and Hebrew.
