Pastorius Park concerts
begin June 16
The 2004 Pastorius Park concert
series will begin on Wednesday, June 16,
with a concert by bluesman Georgie Bonds
and his band. The series, which will include
10 Wednesday evening concerts and one Sunday
afternoon children's concert, is sponsored
by the Chestnut Hill Community Association.
All the concerts will be given
at Pastorius Park, Lincoln Drive and Abington
Avenue. Rain place is Springside School's
large auditorium, Cherokee Street and West
Willow Grove Avenue. Each of the evening
concerts will begin at 7:30 p.m., one half-hour
earlier than the starting time in past years.
The children's concert, to
be given by the Erin Flynn & Co-op Band,
is scheduled for Sunday, July 11, at 3:30
p.m. This band is known for its high-energy
interactive spin on kids' classics and family
friendly versions of their parents' favorites.
Following the Georgie Bonds
concert, the series will continue with Walter
Bell Latin Jazz Unit, featuring an evening
of jazz music, on June 23; The Allentown
Band, the country's oldest concert band,
June 30; City Rhythm Orchestra, swing music,
July 7; Klingon Klez, Klezmer music, July
14; Solas, traditional Irish music, July
21; the Quaker City String Band, an award-winning
Mummers band, July 28; Amos Lee, soul, August
4; the Savoy Company, Gilbert & Sullivan
favorites, August 11, and Zydeco a Go Go,
August 18.
The CHCA's annual picnic honoring
police officers, firefighters and postal
workers will take place on June 23, at 6
p.m., prior to the Walter Bell Latin Jazz
Unit concert. Chestnut Hill restaurateurs
Paul Roller and Greg Welsh will cook a picnic
supper, CHCA Social Division vice president
Tia Burke said at the CHCA board of directors
meeting on May 27.
Community members are invited
to join police officers, firefighters, postal
workers and city officials for the picnic.
The picnic will be free to public servants
and their families. Reservations for the
rest of the community are $7.50; children
under eight will be admitted free. Reservations
are now being accepted; call CHCA administrative
assistant Susan Medosch at 215-248-8810
for more information.
Burke, who is chairing the
concert committee, is seeking volunteers
to help at the picnic between 5:30 and 7:30
p.m., or at any of the concerts. She is
also seeking local businesses to sponsor
the programs and/or donate raffle prizes
for two of the concerts. (Raffle prizes
and sponsors have already been chosen for
the other concerts.). Burke can be reached
by e-mail at tia.burke@verizon.net.
In conjunction with the series
new lineup of musical styles, which is more
varied than in recent years, new posters
and brochures have been designed by Ed Bednow,
a retired graphics designer in Mt. Airy.
Bednow, a longtime fan of the series, designed
a new logo and tagline, "Music Under the
Moon." The posters and brochures will be
distributed to local businesses and institutions
by volunteers.
Jane Piotrowski, a CHCA board
member, designed a flyer announcing the
picnic for distribution to police stations,
firehouses and post offices. Another flyer
will be prepared to promote the children's
concert.
Guests at each concert will
be greeted by representatives of community
organizations. CHCA board members will pass
out programs and request donations at the
June 16 concert.
Supporting the concert series
this year are North by Northwest, Citizens
Bank, Magarity Ford and Magarity Chevrolet,
Merrill Lynch-Sarian / Nottingham Group,
Eichler & Moffly, McNally's and the
Chestnut Hill Business Association.
Brochures are available at
the CHCA office at Town Hall, 8434 Germantown
Ave. The concerts are funded by Chestnut
Hill Community Fund, the CHCA's non-profit
arm, which raises money for community programs
from area residents and businesspersons.
