Norwood Fontbonne Academy math and science teacher Anna Marie Croney has been invited to lead a delegation of science educators from the United States as part of the People to People Ambassador Program to Auckland, New Zealand and Sydney, Australia this summer. Mrs. Croney, who has taught at NFA for the past 18 years, will collaborate with her fellow teachers in New Zealand and Australia, sharing knowledge of best practices, standards and educational research in science instruction.
Recent Trinity College (Hartford, CT) graduates include: Sarah E. Frank of Wyndmoor, B.A. in economics and a member of the women's squash team; Catherine Williams of Blue Bell, with honors, B.A. in political science.
Awards were presented to several Norwood-Fontbonne Academy eighth grade students during graduation ceremonies on June 1. They included: Anna Idler, the Parents' Association Award for Academic Excellence (second highest average), the Jacques R.K. Normand Award, and the Russell G. Clements Jr. Award for Excellence in Drama; Lorraine Beppel, the Dr. James D. Kelly Award; Eleanor McGurkin, the Student Athlete Award; Michelle Lally, the Nello Naticchione IV Memorial Award for Service Learning: Jenna Cave, the Sid MacLeod Award for Excellence in Oratory; Christopher Kay, the Student Athlete Award, and the Jacques R.K. Normand Award; Timothy Lapowsky, the Jacques R.K. Normand Award; Alexandra Crooks, the Parents' Association Award for Academic Excellence (highest general average); John Pedicino, the Dr. James D. Kelly Award; Anjelica Hicks, the Mother Saint John Fontbonne Award; Jacqueline Hain, the Nello Naticchione IV Memorial Award for Service Learning; Kevin Caldwell, the Student Athlete Award.
Germantown Friends School was recently commended for two student publications: the Upper School literary magazine, Polyphony, and the Middle School literary magazine, Graffiti, were honored by the 2003 National Council of Teachers of English (NCTE) Program to Recognize Excellence in Student Literary Magazines. Last year's Polyphony editors, Arielle Cohen of Spring Garden, Ariel Hayes of Elkins Park and Sam Kolbert-Hyle of Wyndmoor, took the magazine to new heights with the addition of an audio CD featuring original songs and spoken word pieces by GFS students.
The Charlotte W. Newcombe Foundation has awarded La Salle University a $29,000 grant to provide financial assistance for non-traditional women students over the age of 25 who are halfway through their college education. Each year, about 20 women students at La Salle receive aid from the Newcome Foundation.
A Mt. Airy student was honored as one of two winners of this year's Mary Margaret Longaker '27 Playwriting Contest at Friends Select School in Center City Philadelphia. One-act plays by Seth Rickards of Mt. Airy and Katharine Sherman of West Philadelphia were chosen from over 20 entries in the contest.
