Senior news

The Chestnut Hill Senior Center wants all seniors to know that it will be open five days a week, six hours a day (Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.) for the entire summer — and it is air-conditioned!

Next Tuesday, June 21, a Philadelphia Zoo docent will discuss “Zoo Babies.” This program is free. Refreshments are available (a small donation is requested).

Those needing to know how to “get here from there,” or generally what is available to senior citizens on everyday public transportation, as well as the “shared ride programs” of Montgomery and Philadelphia counties, should attend a special program at 1 p.m. on Tuesday, June 28. Members and the community at large are invited; there is no charge, and refreshments will be served.

If you are looking for exercise, the senior center has aerobics three mornings a week (effective immediately, all classes begin at 8:30 a.m.), as well as two levels of tai chi, traditional and “armchair” yoga. Those with an artistic or literary side can join the art workshop, French conversation, antiques and collectibles, short story discussion or writers’ groups. Do you like creating things with your hands, or learning new needle and craft skills? Then come to groups meeting Monday mornings or Friday afternoons. Just want to play games? Bridge meets regularly two days a week (Wednesday and Thursday) at noon. Experienced and beginning chess players come together on Friday afternoon. At least one more person is needed for to start a pinochle group on the last Tuesday morning of every month.

Members of the Chestnut Hill Senior Center pay annual dues, which entitles them to reduced fees for classes and trips, home delivery of the center’s monthly calendar and newsletter, and the privilege of borrowing books and films from our large and varied selection. The Chestnut Hill Community Association supports the Senior Center, whose mission is to provide educational programs, favorite activities and camaraderie for adults regardless of their chronological age or residence.

The Chestnut Hill Senior Center is located at 7999 Crittenden Street; the phone number is 215-248-0180.
