Band started here has won 9 Grammy Awards Hill area's "only hillbilly" to perform at CHA by LEN LEAR One of the country's most popular dance and party bands, Asleep at the Wheel, co-founded by two Chestnut Hill area musicians, is returning to Chestnut Hill this Saturday, June 19, to perform a benefit for the Friends of the Wissahickon. "I spent a lot of time in the Wissahickon as a kid," explained the band's co-founder, Ray Benson. "My friends and I would pretend we were Davy Crockett. I'd hunt snakes and toads, and we rode horses a lot. It's just a shame that the park has gone downward, and I am glad to do my part to help bring it back." The Western swing band, which has recorded 23 albums and won nine Grammy awards, will begin the performance at 8 p.m. in the Albert Conkey Center... Hill vet offers holistic option for cancer patients by LAUREN FRITSKY When you first meet Dexter, a black Rottweiler who belongs to Nick and Elizabeth Tellie of Elkins Park, you would think that he is a normal, healthy dog. Actually, as he bounded toward me while sitting in the office of the Chestnut Hill Veterinary Hospital, I thought that he was even a bit friendlier and more active than most dogs. You would never guess that Dexter suffers from osteosarcoma, a type of cancer that most commonly affects t he leg bones of larger breeds of dogs. It took me a full 15 minutes to realize that Dexter is missing a leg. Osteosarcoma spreads very rapidly and metastasizes very early, leaving few effective treatment options. Dogs are tested for the disease with radiographs and biopsies, but once the bone is involved, it quickly becomes very painful. Amputation... Mt. Airy ex-chef now an 'extremely cool Olympian' by KARA DADDARIO "Your job is extremely cool," was my reaction to Mt. Airy resident Peter Slavin. "Yeah, literally," he responded with amusement . Slavin, apart from being a talented artist in various mediums, has concentrated much of his recent artistic endeavors into professional ice sculpting. Best known through his business Fear No Ice, Slavin, 40, has morphed culinary art into a theatrical performance. "I started out as a chef, which I did while I attended Parsons Art School in Manhattan where I majored in fine art and sculpturing. That was where I had my first introduction to ice sculpting," explained Slavin. Prior to launching Fear No Ice with friends Kevin Roscoe of Seattle and Scott Rella of Vail, Colorado, Slavin owned the restaurant Mélange in Philadelphia where he did some minor ice sculpting for the... still packing a powerful punch by COOPER ROBB There is no doubt that Death of a Salesman, Long Day's Journey Into Night, Our Town and Angels in America are all special plays, genuine masterpieces that deserve a spot on any Top-10 list of the greatest American plays of all time. But while any standard for what makes a great play is bound to be subjective (withstanding the test of time being the most popular criterion), as a theater critic I find that repeated viewings is as good a measure of a play's value as any. And after reviewing... Nothing can Tripp up Mt. Airy gallery owner By R.B. STRAUSS What does a gallery director do during the off hours? If it's Luella Tripp of Gallery Siano in Old City, she searches out other venues where her roster of artists has yet more opportunities to exhibit their work. Such is the case at the Museum Restaurant in The Philadelphia... |
