Summer in the city

Philadelphia's often-unsung heroes — police officers, firefighters and postal workers — will be honored by the Chestnut Hill Community Association at a picnic on Wednesday, June 23, at 6 p.m. at Pastorius Park.

Now in its sixth year, this picnic is a popular event among community members, city employees and city officials who enjoy coming by the park to schmooze with constituents, have a good summer supper prepared by two of Chestnut Hill's finest restaurateurs and listen to a concert. Where else are you going to see the fire commissioner and his wife, for example, munching on hamburgers, chatting with passersby?

This year's picnic is being chaired by Mary Cunningham, a winner of the Chestnut Hill Award, who has organized many such events in the past.  Volunteers who are usually seen at CHCA committee meetings here are seen serving up hot dogs, burgers and salad.

Reservations for the picnic are $7.50 to the general public (free to police officers, firefighters and postal workers, their immediate families, and children under eight). To sign up for the picnic, fill out the coupon on p. 2 or call the CHCA office at 215-248-8810. Come join the fun.
