Third seeded Madison Brengle of Dover, Del. defeated the number one seed, Lindsay Burdette (Jackson, Ga.) 6-3, 6-3 in Saturday’s final of the US Junior International Grass Court Championships at the Philadelphia Cricket Club.

Fifth-seeded Rupesh Roy (India) played an aggressive serve and volley game for a 6-1, 6-2 win over sixth seeded Will Spencer (Santa Rosa Beach, Fla.) in the boys’ finals.

In Friday’s girls’ doubles final, Texans Sanaz Marand and Ashley Wienhold came away winners in their straight set victory over Jelena Durisic and Stefanie Nunic 6-3, 6-4.

Brad Cox and Rupesh Roy encountered stiff competition in their match against Clint Bowles and Michael Sroczynski. Bowles and Sroczynski edged out the first set in a tiebreaker and after a tough second set battle, lost that set 7-5. Visibly rattled by calls they questioned, Bowles and Sroczynski appeared to lose focus in the third set as Cox and Roy took the match. Final score: 6-7(8), 7-5, 6-2.

tennbThe conclusion of this tournament marks the 87th year the junior tournament has been played at the Philadelphia Cricket Club. It is an International Tennis Federation event, and it is the only U.S. junior tournament played on grass courts.
