Woodmere Art Museum's neighbors aired these and other
concerns about the institution's proposed addition during a three-plus
hour meeting of the Chestnut Hill Community Association's (CHCA)
Development Review Committee (DRC) last week.

Awards, college job for Springside laxers

It's been a good month for current and former lacrosse players
from Springside School.
At the local school's graduation gathering on June 9, high-scoring
midfielder Zan Morley received the Phyllis M. Vare Sportsmanship Award
as the outstanding athlete in the departing senior class. The following
Monday, June 14, Lehigh University announced that it has hired former
Vare Award winner Liz Brode Ota (Springside '91, Lehigh '95) as head women's
lacrosse coach, effective July 1.
Last fall, Morley accepted a scholarship to join the nationally-prominent
program at Georgetown University [see feature story in 12/4/03 LOCAL].
A two-time high school All-American, she ended her Springside career with
a school-record...

to save a life

One of my first memories as a small child
is that of a neighbor telling me that his parents were
going to have their beautiful 14-year-old pet Collie "put
to sleep." Two days later the friend informed me
that his parents had taken the dog to a veterinarian,
who gave the friendly but immobile tail-wagger an injection
that quickly killed him.
For some time after that, I must admit my
six-year-old psyche became somewhat traumatized whenever
my mother would say at nighttime, "Go up to your
room, Lenny, and get ready for bed. I'll be up soon to
put you to sleep." (I could not help thinking, "Oh,
my God. Is she going to stick a big needle in me? I swear...
