Pastorius Park concerts; The Chestnut Brass on July 6
The group, formed in Philadelphia in 1977, began with street performances on Chestnut Street (hence the name) and has since been featured on National Public Radio and in performances at the Juilliard School, the Chautauqua Institute, the Ambassador Series, the Boston Museum of Art, Merkin Concert Hall, Alice Tully Hall and the Yale Collection of Instruments, among many other venues. Consisting of Bruce Barrie (trumpet), John Thomas (trumpet), Marian Hesse (horn), Larry Zimmerman (trombone) and Jay Krush (tuba), The Chestnut Brass Company is renowned internationally for its musicianship and interpretive skill in a wide range of musical styles. The group has had works written for it by composers such as Leslie Bassett and Philadelphia composers Richard Wernick and Jan Krzywicki, not to mention Peter Schickele, whose music was featured on Hornsmoke, a recording that won Chestnut Brass a Grammy in 2000. Chestnut Brass is well known for its performances of the works of the great American songwriters Stephen Foster and Irving Berlin. In 2004, the group released Foster for Brass, featuring arrangements of beloved tunes such as “Beautiful Dreamer” and “My Old Kentucky Home” on period instruments. One reviewer said the music evokes scenes of a 19th century family “trooping to the town square on a fine summer evening” — exactly what Hillers should do next Wednesday so as not to miss this celebrated hometown combo. Now in its 57th year, the Pastorius Park summer concert series is a beloved Chestnut Hill tradition. Concerts are free; donations are requested. The rain location is Springside School, 8000 Cherokee St. Remaining concerts: • July 13: Singer/songwriter Phil Roy and his band bring his critically acclaimed music to the park. • July 20: Let the good times roll with Alligator Zydeco. • July 27: Swing night with the Jump City Jazz Band. • August 3: Solas, back by popular demand, brings exciting traditional Irish music to the park. • August 10: Pastorius Park is thrilled to welcome the virtuoso trio, Time for Three, in what will prove to be one of the most memorable park concerts in its long history. • August 17: The concert series concludes on a high note with local jazz piano master Orrin Evans and his band. Kidzapalooza – the Annual Kids’ Concert – will be held on Sunday, July 17 from 5 to 7 p.m. and will feature Erin Flynn and the Co-op Band, plus lots of fun, food and festivity. |
