Senior Center News

The Chestnut Hill Senior Center membership is taken in large measure from “The Greatest Generation.” Recently the center hosted veterans from the Second World War, Korea and early Vietnam conflicts, all in celebration of Flag Day. There was much to reminisce over. Next Monday being the Fourth of July, the Senior Center will be closed in celebration.

When we reopen on Tuesday, July 5, the community is invited to a screening of the lively musical An American in Paris with Gene Kelly and Leslie Caron (1957, 1 hour 54 minutes). Air conditioning, popcorn and beverages are provided; there is no charge to attend. In two weeks (Tuesday, July 19 at noon) all Chestnut Hill Senior Center members are invited to the annual picnic — held inside, without competition from bugs and bad weather. Please make your reservation by July 15 and plan to enjoy sandwiches, fresh fruit salad and ice cream sundaes along with entertainment and door prizes.

Although the pace slows down a bit for the summertime, your Senior Center is open as usual, 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Monday through Friday, with a nearly full roster of classes and activities. In fact, the center is adding a much-requested Beginning Spanish class for the remainder of the summer. There will be two six-week sessions: choose between Mondays at 10 a.m. and 1 p.m.; each will run 90 minutes. The first classes will meet on July 11; call to reserve your place no later than July 5.

Our wonderful Writers Group continues to create prose and poetry, fiction and memoirs. These writings are shared and critiqued among the group every Thursday at 10 a.m. They are looking for a few more good (or aspiring) writers! Drop into the class next week … you won’t regret it.

The Chestnut Hill Community Association created and continues to sponsor the Senior Center to benefit adults in the greater Chestnut Hill community, regardless of age or street address. The Center is located at 7999 Crittenden St.; the phone number is 215-248-0180.
