Patriots top Magic in summer hoops by TOM UTESCHER In a summer league meeting between Germantown Academy and Mount St. Joseph last Monday, GA’s Patriots seized the lead early on and held it the rest of the way. The Magic played some of their best ball of the summer season, however, and the 42-30 score actually represented one of the more modest margins of victory for the powerful Pats. Germantown center Jenna Washabaugh scored four of her six total points in the opening minutes, while Colleen Magarity converted off of a steal and Lindsay Freid arced in a three-pointer to give GA a 9-2 lead. A driving lay-up by Claire Kueny accounted for the Mount’s first points. MSJ forward Sarah McGorry, who scored eight points in the opening half, led Mount St. Joe back within four of the leaders at 14-10 with seven minutes left in the period, but Torie Machikas (six points total) helped reverse the trend with a GA three-pointer, and Caroline Doty dropped in two lay-ups in the closing minutes as the Patriots took a ten-point lead into the halftime break, 22-12. GA’s Magarity would register 12 of her game-high 15 points during the second half, but despite an early three-point field goal by the junior-to-be, Mount St, Joe was able to cut into Germantown’s lead. Kate Hagedorn hit a pair of free throws, Laura Johnson and Paige Kenney netted fast break baskets, and McGorry and Aubrey Barrett also scored from the field. A second Barrett bucket, coming on a drive down the lane, got the Magic back within five of the leaders at 29-24, forcing a GA time-out with 10:42 to go. When play resumed, GA’s Magarity went on a 9-0 tear against the Mount. Starting out with two strokes from the foul line, she spearheaded a GA defensive effort that produced several turnovers and resulted in breakaway lay-ups for the Patriots. Her outburst spread the score to 38-24, and Mount St. Joe couldn’t get closer than ten points the rest of the way as Germantown’s Bri Cowden collected four of her six points during the stretch run.
