Senior Center News

The Chestnut Hill Senior Center is blessed with great members. To thank them in a small way for their support of our programs, trips and classes, and for their financial backing, the center is having a members-only picnic on Tuesday, July 19. Lunch begins at noon inside the Senior Center, away from bugs and fickle weather. Come early (say, 11:30 a.m.) for a free blood pressure screening; stay after lunch for a bit of entertainment and a drawing for door prizes. There will be a nominal charge of $3 per person; reservations are requested no later than July 15.

The Senior Center also invites its members to “pool parties” on Tuesday, July 12 and Monday, July 25. Cool off in sparkling blue waters or soak up the sun’s rays on a lounge chair (with sun block on, of course). We will provide cold drinks; you need only RSVP at least one business day ahead to secure a spot (there is a $2 entrance fee).

Most of the center’s classes and special programs are open to the public, on the theory that “the more the merrier.” Get your day started with aerobics (Monday, Tuesday, Thursday at 8:30 a.m.); stretch and de-stress mid-week (Wednesday mornings) with tai chi; end the week with exercise and mediation through yoga (every Friday). Pick up a brush, pencil or sketchpad in our art workshop (Wednesdays), or a pen and paper to join the writers’ group (Thursdays). You say you like to play cards? The senior center offers bridge on Wednesday and Thursday; pinochle games are set for every other Tuesday. Is reading your favorite pastime? The short stories discussion group needs you on Thursdays. Interested in antiques or collecting? Come to the center the first Tuesday of every month.

Call or stop in at the center for further information about all of these regularly scheduled activities and our upcoming trips (Camden RiverSharks baseball on Thursday, Aug. 4; luncheon at the King George Inn followed by “Broadway Showstoppers” at Bristol Riverside Theater on Wednesday, Aug. 10). Reservations and deposits are due now.

The Chestnut Hill Senior Center is located at 7999 Crittenden Street, up the street from Market Square Shopping Center; the phone number is 215-248-0180.
