Cardinals win CHYSC championship
The Cardinals recently won the CHYSC major level baseball championship, coming from behind to beat the Mets 6–4 in the final game of the annual double elimination tournament on June 16.
The Cardinals scored twice in the bottom of the first on a single by Michael McNally and back-to-back doubles by Matthew Primavera (league “Schmitter Leader” with 8 homeruns) and third baseman, Julian Canuso. In the second inning the Cardinals threatened again. With one out and the bases loaded, McNally was at the plate with Matthew Primavera waiting on deck. The Mets’ pitcher, Ben Rogers, and catcher Diego Sanz ended the inning when McNally slapped a sharp one-hopper to Rogers who threw home. Sanz then doubled-up McNally at first.
It was a killer play for the Mets, who then went to work scoring 4 in the fourth off of pitcher Matthew Primavera. The Cardinals were shut down in order in the bottom of the inning by pitcher Ben Rogers. Nevertheless, the Cardinals, who exhibited clutch hitting throughout the season, came to the plate in the bottom of the fifth with the top of their lineup at the plate. The Mets were playing well, but after singles from lead-off hitter Henry Blood and McNally, Matthew Primavera doubled, leaving the score tied 4–4. After Primavera stole home for the go ahead run, third baseman Julian Canuso walked and first baseman John Carney reached first on a fielder’s choice when catcher Kevin Clobes scored Carney with a double. The score was now 6–4 — all the Cardinals would need.
Credit needs to be given to the Mets, who made it to the finals the hard way. They lost to the Pirates in the first round of the playoffs, sending them to the redemption bracket. They then played three consecutive sudden death games to reach the finals and the Cardinals. The Mets, lead by Ben Rogers, Diego Sanz, Gilman Myran and Jake Bradbury, were 11-3 during the season, finishing third behind the Cubs.
The Cardinals finished their storied season 13 -1 behind the pitching of Matthew Primavera and Frankie Primavera and the clutch hitting of Matthew Primavera, Henry Blood, Michael McNally and Julian Canuso. During the playoffs, Frankie Primavera became the Cardinals ace on the mound and held the Mets scoreless for 3 innings in the championship contest. Kevin Clobes and Charlie Taylor proved to be valuable additions to the club.
Every game someone stepped up to change the outcome of the game: players like first baseman John Carney, whose defensive play at first base earned him the nickname “Scoop,” and left fielder Tom Sullivan, whose acrobatic catches shut down teams early. Dan York, Clay Bryan, Tom and Chris Jordan all contributed to the Cardinals wonderful season. (The Cardinals are sponsored by the law firm of Marvin & Henkin).
