Mount romps past shortstaffed Wolverines
by TOM UTESCHER
Kennedy Kenrick High School took an early lead over the Mount St. Joseph Magic in a summer league basketball bout last Wednesday evening, but the Wolverines had no reserve players on the bench and eventually ran out of steam in a 64-29 loss to MSJ. Alexa Buchanan (13 points), Aubrey Barrett (11), Sarah McGorry (ten) and Paige Kenney (eight) topped a list of 11 scorers for the Mount.

Local waitress ‘plays ball’
Carolyn Ingram, a friendly, vivacious, 5’ 4”, 26-year-old Trolley Car Diner waitress, stepped up this spring to coach Mt. Airy Baseball’s Blue Jays to the surprise of coaches, parents, and players.

What was so surprising? “It’s not that she’s attractive”, quipped one bystander, and “it’s not that she has tattoos,” remarked a parent. “But Dad”, protested a little boy, “she’s a girl”!

Ingram’s Blue Jays are a team of 15 five and six year olds in Mt. Airy Baseball’s T-Ball League. Children in the T-Ball League are introduced to baseball and taught the basics of hitting, fielding and teamwork. Sponsored by U.S. Foodservice, Ingram’s team included her son, who played in every one of their 13 games.

New DVD set resurrects excitement of Phils’ championship season
Return with us now to those thrilling days of yesteryear. And I do mean “thrilling.” The time: October 21,1980. The place: Veterans Stadium. “The Phillies win the World Series.”

Remember? That first and only Phillies World Series win, and the excruciating season leading up to it, are captured on a commemorative three-DVD set recently released by the Phillies. It’s a bargain at $24.99. Would also be a bargain at $25, or twice that. The three DVD’s include two excellent retrospectives on the team and the season, a 30-minute piece called “The Team that Wouldn’t Die” and an hour-long retrospective, “Glory Days.”

Phillies Reader Updated
The Phillies Reader, an anthology of some of the best writing about the up-and-down history of the Philadelphia Phillies, was recently re-released in an updated paperback edition featuring several new essays—including one about Citizens Bank Park—and the team’s recent history.
