A brief look at news in Chestnut Hill and surrounding neighborhoods

Pastorius stage vandalized

Vandals did some minor damage to the concert stage area at Pastorius Park sometime late Monday or early Tuesday, but this week’s Wednesday evening concert will go on as planned, the Chestnut Hill Community Association said Tuesday.

Community manager Betty Brady, who examined the damage, said a person or persons apparently jumped up and grabbed or swung from the wires that support the lights over the stage. Light bulbs were removed and smashed, and a utility pole supporting the lights was left leaning to the side, she said.

Brady said that park maintenance personnel made repairs to the stage area early Tuesday afternoon and neither the regularly scheduled Phil Roy concert on July 13 or the July 20 Alligator Zydeco show would be affected.

Group to meet over Mt. Airy project

The Wissahickon East Project, a nonprofit conservation group, will host a meeting this week to discuss the controversial housing development planned for a six-acre site along the Cresheim Creek in East Mt. Airy.

The meeting, set for July 14 at 7 p.m. in the amphitheater of the Lutheran Theological Seminary, will include both an information session, led by legal advisor Brian Flaherty, and an opportunity for area residents to weigh in on the current proposal, said Howard Coale, the group’s director.

The plan, which would place 23 single-family, suburban-style homes on the site, drew the community’s ire at a contentious public meeting with Bala Cynwyd-based developer DeSouza Brown late last month. The developer will not be present for this week’s meeting, Coale said.

The group is working with the community to draft an overall strategy for the private land, which they would like the owner to donate. Because of the property’s steep slopes and watershed restrictions, DeSouza Brown needs at least four zoning variances to build.
