Burke returns to CHA as new A.D.

In hiring a successor for outgoing athletic director Stan Parker, Chestnut Hill Academy didn’t have to stray far from home.

Mark Burke, who grew up in Wyncote and was the second of four brothers to graduate from CHA, has ended his seven-year tenure as assistant basketball coach at Millersville University in order to take the helm of the sports program at his alma mater.

CHA summer soccer falls to college club

With two of its top seniors out of action, Chestnut Hill Academy’s summer league soccer team, A.C. Milan, was younger than usual when it took the field for last Thursday’s game. It wasn’t surprising that the local booters suffered a 7-2 setback against Arsenal, a squad made up primarily of older players from Arcadia University.

CHA enjoyed an early corner but did not get off a shot, and Arsenal got on the board first with a straight-on shot from the 18 about two-and-a-half minutes into the first of the 25-minute halves. The college squad then went up 3-0, striking with 14 and 12 minutes left in the period.

Hoop-It-Up in Philly

The 2004 Hoop-It-Up National Tour will make its 16th annual Philadelphia stop on July 24-25 in the Franklin Mills Mall parking lot at 1455 Franklin Mills Circle in the Northeast. The tournament features a two-day basketball extravaganza with area and statewide players competing in three-on-three games for those age eight and up.

Local athletes sign to play college sports

Fourteen scholar athletes from William Penn Charter School – including 10 young women –gathered earlier this year to celebrate and finalize their college selection. Before a gathering of friends and delighted parents, the students announced their commitment to play their sports at some of the country’s most prestigious colleges and universities.
