New summer programs in Mt. Airy for children
by GAIL COHEN
A new schedule of late summer children’s classes was announced this week by the Moving Arts Studio in Mt. Airy, also known as MaMa.
“In past years, August and early September were died-on-the-vine times,” says MaMa’s assistant director Deirdre Kilkenny.
“By mid-August, frankly, it was discouraging, and we had been thinking of simply closing the studio for August. But now both of our studios are air-conditioned — one completely – and we are better known for the range and caliber of our kids’ classes. Also, we’ve learned to be flexible in accommodating family travel schedules for summer.
“So I’m pleased to announce that due to demand, we just scheduled a Late Summer Series for Kids, with more than a dozen classes a week, geared for newborns to teens. These classes will continue right into early September.”
Late summer classes for children include: Patty Nasuti’s Tuesday &/or Thursday, Aug. 2 – Sept. 14, Mommy & Me (2 – 3 yrs.), 2:15 – 3 p.m.; Creative Movement (3 – 4.5 yrs.), 3:15 – 4 p.m.; Ballet (5 – 8 yrs.), 4 – 5 p.m.; and Jazz/Hip Hop for Teens (5 – 6 p.m.).
Caroline Kinne’s Sunday Creative Movement classes, Aug. 31 – Sept. 8, (3 – 4 yrs.) 12:15 – 1 p.m. and (5 – 7 yrs.) 1:30 – 2:15 p.m.
Martin Reuter’s Capoeria for Kids (8 – 13 yrs.), Wed. 10:30 – 11:30 a.m.
Reuter’s Capoeria for Teens with Brazilian percussion instruments, Mon. 7:30 – 9:30 p.m. and Fri., 6 – 9 p.m.
Cara McCartney’s Refresher Ballet classes. Drop in for teens and adults, Tues. & Thurs. 7:30 – 9 p.m.
Angela Watson’s African Dance with live drums — for the whole family (starting at 5 yrs. old) Tues. 7:30 – 9 p.m.
Teens are also welcome to join adult classes, including Row the River, Salsa, Pilates/Yoga and Belly Dance.
No registration fees are charged.
Come fall, more children’s classes will be added to the studio’s roster. They will include Musical Munchkins, Gymfoolery, Tumbling, Nature Yoga, Drumming, Fencing, Hip Hop, Modern Dance, Tap, Mommy & Yogi Baby. The All-Boys Tap Class will be a one-of-its kind class in Philadelphia.
Children’s parties — with fencing, capoeria and dance teachers — continue to be a favorite throughout the year.
MaMa — Moving Arts of Mt. Airy — is located at the corner of Carpenter Lane & Greene Street, across the street from High Point Café and Creperia, Weavers Way Co-op and Henry School — just off Lincoln Drive.
