Pastorius Park Concerts
Picnic honors public servants
By AMY BRISSON
Fun, food and music is in store at the annual community picnic to honor police officers, firefighters and postal workers. Sponsored by the Chestnut Hill Community Association, the picnic will be on Wednesday, July 27, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in Pastorius Park. Following the picnic will be music performed by the Jump City Jazz Band, part of the park’s summer concert series.
The dinner will feature traditional picnic and barbeque fare, as well a real fire engine to entertain the kids. In past years Mayor Street, City Councilwoman Donna Reed Miller and other notables have attended to honor our local public servants, and the picnic has been featured on local television news channels.
“This is an opportunity for the community to come out and show their support,” said picnic chairperson and organizer Mary Cunningham. “Come and have a fun night with great picnic food and interaction with fellow Chestnut Hillers.”
The Jump City Jazz Band, who will begin playing at 7:30 p.m., is a group from Maine specializing in swing, jazz, pop and rock.
“They are a very high energy, very accomplished swing band that is great to listen to and great to dance to,” says CHCA member and event organizer Tia Burke. The concert is free and open to the public.
The picnic dinner is free for all police officers, firefighters, postal workers and their immediate family. Admission for community members is $7.50 (children under the age of 8 get in free); reservations may be made by calling the CHCA office at 215-248-8810 or by completing and mailing the adjacent coupon by Friday, July 22.
“The traditional annual Police, Firemen and Postal Worker's Picnic, sponsored by the Chestnut Hill Community Association and manned by community volunteers, gives us the opportunity to 'return the favor' to these fine, public servants who dedicate their careers to ensuring safety and service,” said Dina Hitchcock, vice president of the CHCA social division. “Everyone is encouraged to come out on Wednesday, July 27, before the concert to enjoy the food and personally thank these fine folks.”

Pastorius Park Concerts: Annual Police, Fire & Postal Picnic, Jump City July 27
This week’s concert at Pastorius Park will be preceded by the annual police, firefighter and postal carrier’s picnic. The public is invited to come out to say “thanks” to our hard-working public servants and enjoy some great dance music.
Sponsored by the Chestnut Hill Community Association and the Chestnut Hill Business Association, the picnic will be on Wednesday, July 27, from 6 to 7:30 p.m. in Pastorius Park. Following the picnic will be music performed by the Jump City Jazz Band, part of the park’s summer concert series.
The dinner will feature traditional picnic and barbeque fare, as well a real fire engine to entertain the kids. In past years Mayor Street, District Attorney Lynne Abraham, City Councilwoman Donna Reed Miller and other notables have attended, and the picnic has been featured on local television news channels.
The Chester Springs-based Jump City Jazz Band will begin playing at 7:30 p.m. The 18-member group, which makes a return trip to the Pastorius stage, bills itself as featuring some of the area’s “finest musicians and vocalists.” Their sound is rooted in the swing era but also includes the modern “jump jive” sounds of groups like the Brian Setzer Orchestra, classic jazz standards and rhythm and blues. The concert is free and open to the public.
The picnic dinner is free for all police officers, firefighters, postal workers and their immediate families. Admission for community members is $7.50 (children under the age of 8 get in free); reservations may be made by calling the CHCA office at 215-248-8810 or by completing and mailing the adjacent coupon by Friday, July 22.
Upcoming shows in the Pastorius Park concert series include Solas on August 3, Time for Three on Aug. 10 and Orrin Evans on Aug. 17.
