COOL LOCAL KIDS

Keeping cool during the summer are two local synchronized skating teams at the Wissahickon Skating Club in Chestnut Hill. Combining several skaters on a team and skating “in sync” is what this sport is all about. Synchronized skating, first organized in 1954, is one of the fastest growing disciplines in the sport of figure skating. Seen here are (top row, from left) Melanie Bavaria, Julia Stepanuk, Natalie Bartlett, Devon Winter, Deborah Mustafa, Maura Boughter and Megan Ware; (middle row, from left) Susie Thompson, Carolina Concannon, Emily McGowan, Olivia Haley-Schmidt...

New A.D. in place at CHC

by TOM UTESCHER

A week after his 30th birthday, Bill Stiles realized his longtime ambition to become the athletic director of a collegiate sports program.

Stiles, an assistant athletic director and assistant baseball coach at Ursinus College for the past five years, officially became the new A.D. at Chestnut Hill College on July 19.

Chestnut Hill, a traditionally all-women’s college which became a coeducational institution last fall, fielded only a men’s basketball team for the 2003-2004 academic year. This year there will be male athletes competing in soccer and tennis, and a men’s and women’s cross...

CHC summer squad jolted by Gwynedd

by TOM UTESCHER

In their last regular-season contest in the Malvern Summer Basketball League, the Chestnut Hill College Griffins fell behind Gwynedd Mercy in the opening minutes and never caught up. The locals were around a dozen points behind the leaders six minutes into the second half, then Gwynedd’s momentum snowballed and the result was a 69-37 defeat for the Hill women.

An opening lay-up for Gwynedd Mercy (also nicknamed the Griffins) was matched by CHC’s Andrea Carter, but after that GMC ran off ten straight points, and the locals didn’t score another field goal until Kate Quintus converted off of a rebound about nine minutes into the game.

Gwynedd was frequently able to strip the ball from the Chestnut Hill players, and CHC did not box out well under the boards. The result was that Gwynedd enjoyed multiple...

Magic master Maidens, are outshone by Jems

by TOM UTESCHER

In the Hatboro Horsham summer league last week the hoopsters of Mount St. Joseph had an easy time of it in a Monday match-up against North Penn High School, as they rolled over the Maidens, 44-19. Lacking two of their starters the following night, the Magic found much rougher going against Villa Joseph Marie, suffering a 33-29 setback.

Ten minutes before Monday’s game the Magic only had four players at the gym, but small groups began arriving from a summer league soccer game and the Mount wound up with an ample bench a few minutes into the action. North Penn stayed close to the locals at first and only trailed 6-8 about eight minutes into the game. The Maidens would manage no more than a lone free throw for the rest of the half, however, and Mount St. Joe led 19-7 at the break.

Emily Johnson canned a three-pointer, a lay-up, and a pair of free...

Springside cruises to summer hoops victory

by TOM UTESCHER

For the first time since the mid-1990's Springside School has established a summer basketball presence, playing in the Upper Gwynedd League in North Wales.

The roster is an amalgam of actual Springside students and other players from the Renegades AAU club program, which is run by the Lions’ new basketball coach, Steve Flynn. Most of the participants are ninth and tenth graders (a few are even younger) and are presided over by Flynn and his AAU colleague Monte Pool.

Play began in the league after the July 4 weekend, but because the action takes place on outdoor courts, thus far about half of the scheduled contests have been postponed due to rain.

Last Wednesday night Springside, officially listed as Team Six, built up...
