Springside’s Fuery leads national hoops champs

by TOM UTESCHER

Next month when Springside School seventh graders are discussing what they did during summer vacation, winning a national championship will be high on the list for basketball player Kristen Fuery.

Kristen was a mainstay for the 12-year-old Renegades club team which won the AAU 12-and-Under Division II National Tournament that was staged in Nashville, TN July 4 through 11. The post player from Springside emerged as the high scorer for the entire tournament, averaging 22 points per game.

“Some of the teams we played had two or three girls on me, trying to shut me...

CHC edged out in final summer games

by TOM UTESCHER

As competition in the Malvern women’s summer basketball league drew to its conclusion last week, Chestnut Hill College dropped a pair of close contests in the playoff consolation bracket.

After the Griffins recovered from a 14-19 halftime deficit against Albright on Monday, the teams stayed within a few points of one another the rest of the way, but in the end the Lady Lions squeezed past Chestnut Hill, 42-39. Two nights later, the Griffins again wound up with a three-point shortfall as they succumbed to an understaffed Goldey-Beacom team, 66-63.

Against Albright, lay-ups by Amy Ciaburri and Lindsay Tornetta and two...

Mount humbles Hatters, is toppled by Trojans

by TOM UTESCHER

Mount St. Joseph Academy faced a pair of nearby suburban public school rivals during the final week of play in the Hatboro Horsham Summer Basketball League.

Last Tuesday, the Magic had an easy time of it against league host Hatboro Horsham High School, breaking the bout wide open in the second half to triumph 52-22. Thursday’s game against Wissahickon was much closer, and in the last four minutes the Mount fumbled away a six-point lead and wound up losing 29-24.

Nine MSJ players scored in the first half of the Hatboro Horsham game, as Aubrey Barrett and Sarah McGorry led the way with four apiece. The Magic owned a healthy...

Chestnut Hill College adds sports teams, coaches

The 2003-2004 academic year was memorable for Chestnut Hill College’s athletic program. History was made when the women’s soccer team captured the college’s first Atlantic Women’s College Conference (ASCC) title and advanced to the NCAA tournament and the men’s basketball team stepped onto the court to become the first male team to represent the school in competitive sports.

In 2004-2005, the college is continuing to build on its success in the NCAA Division III with the introduction of six varsity athletic teams, a new athletic director to lead the program’s growth and three new coaches to guide the student-athletes.

Four men’s sports and two new women’s teams will be added to the upcoming school year’s athletic schedule. The men’s soccer team, which competed at the club...

Springside cruises to summer hoops victory

by TOM UTESCHER

For the first time since the mid-1990's Springside School has established a summer basketball presence, playing in the Upper Gwynedd League in North Wales.

The roster is an amalgam of actual Springside students and other players from the Renegades AAU club program, which is run by the Lions’ new basketball coach, Steve Flynn. Most of the participants are ninth and tenth graders (a few are even younger) and are presided over by Flynn and his AAU colleague Monte Pool.

Play began in the league after the July 4 weekend, but because the action takes place on outdoor courts, thus far about half of the scheduled contests have been postponed due to rain.

Last Wednesday night Springside, officially listed as Team Six, built up...
