Navy Petty Officer 3rd Class Anwar Z. Williams, 1997 graduate of Germantown High School, recently returned from deployment while assigned to the aircraft carrier USS Carl Vinson, homeported in Norfolk, Va.

In June 2005, for the second month in a row, Carol Miller was the top producing agent for the Lafayette Hill office of CENTURY 21 Alliance. Joining her in achieving top honors were Mia Schrank, Marguerite Stokes, Tricia Packer and Stan Szostek.

Ahmeenah Young, of Mt. Airy, co-owner of North by Northwest and executive vice-president of external affairs for the Pennsylvania Convention Center Authority, has joined the board of directors of Mt. Airy USA, the local non-profit community development corporation. Young also serves on the boards of the Greater Philadelphia Urban Affairs Coalition, Philadelphia Forward, Philadelphia Academies, Black Alliance for Educational Options (BAEO), North Philadelphia Health Systems and the Lotus Academy.

Sharmain Matlock-Turner, of Mt. Airy, president and executive director, Greater Philadelphia Urban Affairs Coalition was recently named as secretary of the board of the United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania.

Kelly Musselman, of Ambler, has joined Long & Foster Real Estate, Inc., Blue Bell, as a sales associate.

Roxborough Memorial Hospital has announced the appointment of Daniel Barr as the institution’s new director of business development. Most recently, Barr served as the hospital’s compliance and privacy officer.

Rob Lamb and Drew Milliken were the top producers at the Chestnut Hill office of Prudential Fox & Roach for June 2005.

Mark Bachus, of Chestnut Hill, has joined King of Prussia Mall as its new marketing manager.

Barbra Shivy, of Chestnut Hill, a special education teacher at Glenside Elementary School, has been included in the 2005 edition of Who’s Who Among American Teachers.

Peter Case, of West Mt. Airy, a GFS graduate, was named to the merit list at Kenyon College for the second semester of the 2004-05 academic year.

Abigail Childs, of E. Mt. Airy, a GFS graduate, will start Bates College this fall.

Thirty School District of Philadelphia high school students were honored by the Verizon Foundation, in partnership with United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania, on June 16, for demonstrating their use of technology to transform their communities in innovative ways through the Second Annual Verizon YouthTech Essay Contest. Hahna Maree Kane, of Springside School, was among the top three first place winners, for which she will receive a new personal computer and guidance, assistance in implementation and design from the United Way of Southeastern Pennsylvania’s Teaming for Technology (T4T) initiative to help bring her innovative idea to life. Kane’s winning essay dealt with the issue of women and technology through her “Student Tech Leaders Program,” which aims to cultivate a population of technologically fluent citizens within the Springside community.

Karen and Carl Buchholz, of Flourtown, are the co-chairs for the Swan Lake gala at the Academy of Music on Sept. 29.

Lisa Murphy, of Roxborough, has joined CENTURY 21 Alliance, Lafayette Hill, as a sales associate.

THE NEWLY-FORMED SCHUYLKILL CENTER COMMUNITY COUNCIL is dedicated to improving the ecological vitality of the Schuylkill River Watershed. Its members comprise a diverse group of Schuylkill Center neighbors and representatives from local civic associations and institutions. SPRINGFIELD JR. WOMEN'S CLUB DONATES TO KEYSTONE HOSPICE.

The club assists the hospice with financial donations as well as providing event volunteer assistance.

VOLUNTEER OF THE YEAR.

For his time, dedication and uplifting presence as a volunteer at the Roxborough Y, the YMCA of Philadelphia & Vicinity has named Roxborough’s Christian Sondergaard its “Roxborough YMCA Volunteer of the Year.” Pictured here (from left), are Sondergaard, an associate at the law firm Hecker Brown Sherry and Johnson, LLP and Sean Elliot, executive director of the Roxborough YMCA. An active volunteer for three years, Sondergaard has coached baseball, basketball, football, soccer and hockey for children ages four to seven. He has also chaperoned trips, campaigned for Annual Support funds and helped install a new playground at the Y. In addition to his YMCA work, the attorney has also provided legal aid for the Homeless Advocacy Program and the Legal Clinic for the Disabled.
