Stroud Award Grant

Environmental historian Ellen Stroud, Ph.D., a Mt. Airy native and one of the owners of Penguin Photo in Chestnut Hill, has been awarded two prestigious postdoctoral fellowships for the 2004-2005 academic year, one from the American Council of Learned Societies and the other from the Charles Warren Center for Studies in American History at Harvard University. Stroud, an assistant professor at Oberlin College, will spend the year at Harvard, where she and eight other scholars from across the United States will participate in a yearlong seminar on “The Culture and Politics of the Built Environment in North America.” Both fellowships will support her work on her second book, titled Dead as Dirt: An Environmental History of the Dead Body. Stroud is also completing a book titled Seeing the Trees: Urbanization And Reforestation in the Northeastern United States. Stroud earned her Ph.D. at Columbia University. She attended C.W. Henry School in Mt. Airy, and graduated from Philadelphia High School for Girls and the University of Michigan.  She holds masters degrees from the University of Oregon and Columbia.

 

Welcome, New Baby


Oliver Guthrie Macdonald was born to Sam and Kristin Schelter Macdonald on July 20 in London, weighing in at 8 lbs.14oz. and 21” long. Maternal grandparents are Katherine Converse and Craig Schelter, of Chestnut Hill. Paternal grandparents are Ann and James Macdonald, of Cambridge, England.
