THE MILITIA HAWK WATCH opens at 9 a.m. on Thursday, Sept 1 for its 18th year. A good season is anticipated if the hurricanes do not affect the normal path of the east coast raptor migration. The Butterfly Garden is doing especially well this year, and the bird feeders are filled each day. A new feature this year is a small shaded ADA accessible pavilion, with a picnic table that accommodates three wheelchairs with room for more on the apron. A barbecue has also been placed on the apron at appropriate ADA height. The Hawk Watch is open from 9 – 5 seven days a week until November 1. A compiler is always on the deck to help guests understand the migration, and there are binoculars that can be borrowed. For groups, call Marylea Klauder at 215-884-2558 and arrangements will be made to make the visit even more educational.

Parish bids farewell to the Rev. Anita Schell-Lambert

schnellThe Rev. Anita Schell-Lambert has left St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Chestnut Hill, to answer a call as rector of St. Peter’s Church in Bennington, Vermont. St. Paul’s has been twice blessed with her ministry, the first from 1985 to 1988, and then from 2001 to the present, when she served as associate rector.

Anita’s legacy of energy and enthusiasm, especially for spiritual formation and environmental issues, has made St. Paul’s a richer parish. When asked to comment on her ministry at St. Paul’s, she said, “I have learned so very much from this great congregation about how critical it is to be oneself, supported and strengthened by a loving and committed faith community. The Christian witness I have experienced every day I have worked at St. Paul’s has been the greatest blessing for my walk with Christ, forever underscoring for me, ‘The place God calls you to is where your deep gladness and the world’s deep hunger meet.’ Thank you St. Paul’s and the Chestnut Hill community at large for the great privilege and profound joy of sharing ministry together over the years.”

DELIVERING THE RECYCLING MESSAGE.

ideMt. Airy’s Marge Ide, of the Philadelphia Streets Department, recently joined Recycling Office mascot Curby Bucket, Brianna DiTomaso and children from across the city at the Free Library of Philadelphia to celebrate Ben Franklin’s 300th birthday. Ide and Curby reminded partygoers that in Philadelphia, mixed paper is to be set out in paper bags. Any durable plastic container, not just a city-issued blue bucket, can be used to recycle cans and bottles. For more information, call 215-685-RECYCLE or go to www.recycling.phila.gov.
